Acrylic polymers are formulated to be tough and hard but also flexible. They are usually water based and dry to a rubbery like finish. They are a fully adhered elastomeric membrane that’s formed to attach to the roof. They do not usually hold up well to ponding water but work well in area that drains well. They are usually installed as a coating between 15-30 mils thick. They are seamless and often use a fabric membrane on joints. They offer good UV reflectivity and elasticity and have low VOC’s making them a green product often with Energy Star ratings. Acrylics usually wear 1-2 mils per year similar to Latex paint but can offer from 10-20 warranties depending on the manufacturer’s specifications. Like all roof coatings there several steps to proper preparation of the surfaces and proper installation to guarantee a quality product for many years.

Urethane is also known as thermoplastic polyurethane.  It is a thermoplastic elastomeric (TPE) that combines the positive properties of rubber and plastic.  Aliphatic urethane does not degrade in ultraviolet light and it delivers greater visual clarity.  Mixed with titanium dioxide, this material creates an Energy Star rated roof coating that reflects up to 90% of sunlight.  It holds up under pooling water and direct sunlight.

Silicone coatings are single-component, moisture-curing silicone rubber roof coating systems designed for use on sprayed-in-place polyurethane foam or other roof surfaces. These coatings can be spray-applied or hand-rolled if the job is small enough. Smallest repairs can be applied with a paint brush. Silicones are inorganic by nature and thus imperceptible to UV radiation. Unlike almost any other coating, silicone coatings do not contain UV stabilizers. Other lower cost systems may not contain enough UV stabilizers, with resulting short service life often not even exceeding 5 years. Properly applied, silicones may last for 20 years and more. Also, silicones cure quickly. In the event of changing weather, even heavy rain, coatings as new as 1 hour will not cause runoff. By comparison, many acrylics truly require a minimum of 24 hours between application and the first rain. Silicones offer excellent tensile strength and elongation. They perform well in extremely cold as well as very hot weather. Many customers broadcast granules into the freshly applied silicones for an even tougher roof.
